21 Years, 1,200+ Placements: What We Have Learned About Hiring Right

When I started TopGear Consultants in 2005, I had one conviction: that hiring right is not a process — it is a discipline. That every placement we make affects a company’s future, a family’s livelihood, and an individual’s career. That conviction has not changed in 21 years.

What has changed is everything else. The market, the tools, the candidate expectations, the client sophistication, and the role of the recruitment firm in the talent ecosystem. Here is what 21 years and over 1,200 placements have taught me about hiring right.

The Best Hire Is Rarely the Most Obvious One

Early in my career, I noticed that the candidate who looked best on paper — the right company, the right title, the right years of experience — was often not the one who thrived in the role. The best hires are frequently the ones who bring something unexpected: a different industry perspective, an unconventional career path, or a leadership quality that the job description did not think to ask for.

This is why the best recruitment is a conversation, not a matching exercise.

Speed Is Not the Enemy of Quality — Delay Is

I have seen thousands of searches, and the pattern is consistent: the companies that lose great candidates are not the ones who moved too fast. They are the ones who moved too slow. Indecision is the enemy of good hiring. Great candidates are always in demand. Every week of delay is a week another company can make them a better offer.

Culture Fit Is Real — and Frequently Underestimated

The most technically qualified candidate who does not fit the culture will underperform or leave. The candidate who fits the culture, has the foundational skills, and is motivated to grow will almost always exceed expectations. After 21 years, I have stopped being surprised by how often companies hire for the resume and fire for the fit.

The Recruiter’s Job Is Not to Fill Roles — It Is to Build Careers

The placements I am most proud of are not necessarily the most senior or the highest-fee. They are the ones where a candidate stretched into a role they were not sure they were ready for — and thrived. Where a company took a chance on an unconventional profile — and it paid off. Recruitment done well changes lives. That is not a small thing.

What Has Not Changed in 21 Years

Despite every technological change — job portals, LinkedIn, AI tools, video interviews — the fundamentals of great recruitment have remained constant. Relationships. Trust. Deep listening. Honest counsel. The ability to see potential, not just credentials.

These are not things that technology replaces. They are what makes the difference between a recruiter and a headhunter. Between a vendor and a partner.

The Power of Hiring Right

I wrote a book with that title because I believe it is the most important business decision most companies make — and the one most consistently underinvested in. The right person in the right role, at the right time, changes the trajectory of a business. The wrong one costs far more than the recruitment fee.

After 1,200+ placements, I am still humbled by the responsibility of that — and still as committed to getting it right as I was in 2005.
